SENJ
-
city under Nehaj
Today's
Senj, old Senia, is the oldest town on the Croatian Littoral.
30 centuries have passed from its beginnings.
It is located on the spot where the sea and Velebit meet. it can be seen
from a considerable distance thanks to its Fort Nehaj which captain from
Senj Ivan Lenković had built
in 1558 during the invasion of the Turks and Venetians. The
outskirts of Senj which can be seen from Nehaj were immense green gardens
filled
with fruit trees, vegetables and domestic wine grapes from ancient
times to the 19th century. During the wars of the past centuries
the Senj gardens remained abandoned
and without owners. But these remainders
are evidence of painstaking and persistent work of the diligent generations
of inhabitants of Senj and its surroundings
who have worked on the fields, cleared forests, rocky round and thickets,
planted fruit trees, erected numerous terraces
and walled fences among which we now find remains of houses, field houses,
sheep folds and wells. Senj can truly be proud of its position and
ecologically preserved area of which proof lies on all sides.
Upon
coming to Senj you cannot miss its past when you walk down the old city
nucleus representing a live museum with its squares and narrow streets. The
City
Museum is located in the palace of the noble family Vukasović. There is a
display of heritage that directs you into all the secrets of the past, from
Stone Age to contemporary times.Very
early in Croatian history Senj became a Glagolithic center. The Senj plaque
from the 12th century was found in Fortress Nehaj and it is one of the ten
oldest inscriptions in the Old Slavic language. In 1494 the first
Glagolithic m issal
was printed, the first edition form Senj Glagolithic printing shop.
You will not be able to bypass its past, especially the international Senj Carnival
that takes place in the second weekend in August and you will have to remain
for a few days in order to bathe,
enjoy the fresh air and abundance of sun and later proceed to the nearest
destinations.
On the 70 km long coast and crystal clear sea numerous picturesque coastal
villages with lovely beaches await:
Sv. Juraj, Ažić-Lokva, Lukovo, Klada,
Starigrad, Stinica, Jablanac, Prizna i Bunica.
